This was one of my first attempts at producing/directing. I was asked to choose a film that had a strong storyline that could stand on its own as a narrative, while at the same time present an overall impression of what the film was about. That's why I chose the 1960s cult classic, The Graduate. This is a clip from our original film. There are sometimes those wonderful unexpected moments that you decide to keep in when shooting. Ben's expression of dismissal was a piece of humour that I couldn't let go. The actor playing Ben was pretty good. However, the actress, playing Mrs Robinson unfortunately presented me with problems with her timing and continuity, despite impatient efforts.

Pigs`n' Pearls

Pigs`n' Pearls were formed when a childhood friend asked me to manage and produce them. Drummer, Stuart Maxwell had always been inspired by my music and background. Our family name was well known around town and the neighbours were accustomed to the loud sound of guitars and drums booming from our household, where band practice was held on a daily basis from the early 1970s. Pigs`n' Pearls had made a common mistake of booking a recording studio, where the onsite producer gave them some time and help to record their material. That's when Stuart approached me and played their album. He wasn't surprised by the frank response and suggestions. I agreed to work with them and travelled back to the UK from Ireland with the original recordings. The other two band members, Stephen Weir (vocals, and lead guitar) and Tony Liken (Bass) kept in regular contact with me. They became finalists in a talent competition in the US. The Killers manager showed a keen interest, as did the Arctic Monkeys manager, who was genuinely disappointed that he had to back out as he’d already invested a lot of money in his band. The Victorian Police station: If Walls Could Talk

The nature of production being as it is means that nothing ever goes according to plan. This being another of my first attempts at producing and directing was certainly challenging. However, I quickly learned that this is part of the excitement of being a producer, as it tests our creative instincts, including how to adapt and improvise without jeopardising objectives. It also tests your team building, leading and motivational abilities. However, looking at it now, it seems dated and I would make a lot of changes, as it could have been much better. This is a clip from my documentary about an abandoned former Victorian Police station in Manchester, first opened in 1879 and closed in 1959. Shortly after discovering the building, it opened as a police museum, retaining all its original Victorian splendor. Making the film was like taking a step back in time, especially after adding the sound effects of horses on cobbled streets and mill factory horns, along with a dry ice machine to recreate the smog.
